TAN registration is one of the primary registration to start a business. It is a 10 digit alpha-numeric series which is obtained for the purpose of deducting (TDS) or collecting (TCS) tax at source on behalf of government. The amount deducted is required to be deposited to the credit of Central Government indicating the TAN number. A Proprietorship or other business entity like Companies or LLP should deduct tax at source while making certain payment like salary, payment to contractor, rent payment exceeding Rs.1,80,000 per annum.
